SALES FAIL//SERIES GOING DOWN
All right. I received my royalty check (which puts the KFC worker I saw today with her polyester pants so tight I could see her thong in a better earning bracket than me.) For those who didn't check the CHIMERA contest (several entries below), I do want to be clear with this.  The best analogy really is a TV show = an author.  If a TV  show does not get its viewers to watch, it gets cancelled. If I don't get sales/rankings, something of mine gets cancelled. Poof, it's gone.

And from this royalty check, a certain book did not do well at all...and that leads to a decision on my part,  taking in my agent's advice and my publisher's advice. If there is a series you love, but you don't feel you have the time or the money or the inclination to help out the author, that's definitely your choice (and money is tight everywhere. ) But the result is...that series you loved? It will be gone. That one or two characters you thought were the best thing since sliced bread...I'm sorry. I can't write books that don't make any money at all (as opposed to the tiny amount others might make.)

The constant wah wah of readers don't owe authors anything...well, that's true. I never thought any differently. I thought, however, that if a reader liked a series and wanted to keep it around, that logically they'd *know* buying it is the only way to do that.  You don't buy it, the writer can't afford to write it and the publisher has no reason to publish it.  I don't think logic comes any more simple than that. Readers don't owe me squat, but I thought they knew no sales=no series and if you truly loved that series but didn't support it, I don't think you can expect any kind of different outcome.

So now to CHIMERA. It will have to stand up and try to be a series now, because I cannot financially live on one series. Can't be done at my level of the game. Only one series means I go back to my real job which leaves little room for sanity or writing. Please buy CHIMERA, please support it in the way I've seen you kick ass and take names when it comes to supporting other works. Spread the word. Buy June 1st -7th if possible, but mainly buy it. I've never had to lose characters/series before and it hurts to know I won't see them again...that *you* won't see them again when I know many of you did love them.

And this is me waving from Gilligan's Island where the Professor just got kicked off and fed to the sharks. His ratings and sales left no choice. God, I miss those characters already. They were good characters and they had a lot of love between them--a lot of love, a lot of adventure, a lot of snark. It breaks my heart to say goodbye to them. But goodbye is all that's left.  I hope you can help CHIMERA not go the same way.

Omg! Please don't tell me we're talking no more Zeke and Griffen goodness here....They are seriously 2 of the most interesting characters ever! I shun the fake fans who have failed in their minion-ly duties. I think a little piece of me just died, which means a big piece of you must have. (I am now going to crouch in a corner and hide away from the world moping)
robgoodfellarobgoodfella on May 15th, 2010 12:56 pm (UTC)
Yes, big piece died. I wanted someday to do a Z/G oneshot book...doubt they would've let me--all about reaching the widest market possible-sigh, but I wanted to.
skarrahskarrah on May 14th, 2010 08:40 pm (UTC)
Omg!! That's awful news!! *hugs*

It's unblievable how some really crap authors and their series just keep on going but really good authors (and their readers)have to suffer.
robgoodfellarobgoodfella on May 15th, 2010 12:54 pm (UTC)
Hey, Skarrah, been with me from the beginning. :) I remember.

No, No, say it ain't so.......
How can the cold cruel world take away one of my few pleasures in life??????? Your books are one of the few reasons I crawl out from under my bed! (now waiting for June 1). Chimera is already ordered and I await the call that will induce me to crawl out of my hole and make my way to the book store!! I am undergoing withdrawal.........

Chimera
I am buying Chimera, but I'll be in Hawaii that week. What happens if I pre-order on Amazon, does that not count? Would it be better to wait another week and buy at my local bookshop? Thanks!
robgoodfellarobgoodfella on May 14th, 2010 09:58 pm (UTC)
Re: Chimera
Amazon and B&N and Borders counts. Amazon will not have Kindle though as they are currently trying to break my publisher's will. They don't write it, they don't publish it, but for some reason, they feel they have a right to price it (to undercut all other competitors. Wal-Mart is no longer the Evil Empire. Amazon has booted them out of the number one spot.) But if you're an e-reader I do have a list of other places that sell it in that format. Yes, best to pre-order for that first week June 1-7. Much better. Thank you...a lot.

I'm with them - this sucks on so many levels. I love Trixa & her guys. The snark, the ass-kicking, the fashion sense, I loved it all. I've even been planning how to get another day off so I can buy book 2 in during release week in September.

I wish I wasn't stuck at work 'cause I really need to go home & cry now.
robgoodfellarobgoodfella on May 14th, 2010 10:00 pm (UTC)
Book 2 will still be out. It's already been edited, has a cover, is a done deal. Good Zeke and Griffin in it too. Very good. And Trixa and Leo...and Leo's very ill-timed, but hilarious reunion with his foster brother Thor.

And I'm crying with you.
Angelserenitysangel on May 14th, 2010 09:54 pm (UTC)
OMG okay please don't be talking about the Cal series? I mean, if it helps I'll buy hundreds of copies. And hell the same goes for the Trickster series! I love your books all so much and it breaks my heart to think they aren't getting the readers they should.

I try my best to get friends to read and thankfully so far I've managed to get three close friends hooked on both the Cal series and Trickster book and I know at least two of them, like me have Chimera on pre-order.

I'm just so sorry for you. As an artist myself, one pours your heart and soul into your creations and if no one reads or likes them, it's soul destroying.

If I could get everyone I know and get them to get everyone they know and so on to read, I would.

*sending hugs*
robgoodfellarobgoodfella on May 14th, 2010 10:03 pm (UTC)
I appreciate everything you done (I'm trying to get Crowley out of the wallpaper to make me a deal.) And people read it...they just didn't always pay for it or were in any hurry to buy it or borrowed it. All of which equals no money for my publisher and choices have to be made, as much as they break my heart.

This just plain sucks, and it makes me feel very pessimistic about entering into the publishing industry.

But you can count on me to buy several copies of Chimera! I'll distribute them to all of my book-loving friends as graduation presents. And if there's anything else I can do, I will be glad to help.
robgoodfellarobgoodfella on May 15th, 2010 01:02 pm (UTC)
Thanks so much. Turn your icon's scowl on everyone you see and say, 'BUY CHIMERA, MF-ers! NOW!) Okay, not now...but June 1st - 7th if possible.
beenonfire on May 14th, 2010 10:20 pm (UTC)
If the sales on the second book are shockingly awesome, would the series get a third book? Please? At least for a wrap-up third installment! Pleeeeeeaaaaase? I'll buy five books each of the first and second and leave them around public places!
robgoodfellarobgoodfella on May 14th, 2010 10:35 pm (UTC)
Shockingly awesome might change things, but you can't do shockingly awesome all by yourself. I appreciate the ten book offer and give it your best shot, but all on your own, I don't think you could pull it off unless you were a millionaire. Pat pat.

The world cannot be so evil or cruel enough to deprive me of one of the current joys in my life. My friend, serenitysangel, got me hooked on your books and the stories and characters have helped me through a few rough times, especiall recently.

I already have Chimera and the second Trickster novel on pre-order and I will happily buy more copies of your books and share them out to friends to spread the word on how amazing your series and stories are.

This sucks, man. You are pretty much my favorite author, and it really pains me to here this news. I love both Cal and the Trickster Series, and am so looking forward to Chimera. Is Cal or Trixa leaving the place they hold in my heart?

I'm sorry for your loss. If it's hard for the fans, I can only imagen it's 10 times harder for you. =(

My sister and I are behind you 110%, and will continue to support your books.

Emily

Does buying the book during the first week in Canada count in those much-needed ratings? Because I fully intend to wrestle myself a copy on the first of June, but it would really suck if it didn't matter just because of a little border detail. :(
robgoodfellarobgoodfella on May 15th, 2010 12:10 am (UTC)
Unfortunately it doesn't count in the NYT ratings, but it does count in sales. Both are important.

robgoodfellarobgoodfella on May 15th, 2010 01:04 pm (UTC)
I had a great day job, but when bad times came, the company folded and everyone's job was gone, and my degree is of the sort that good jobs come along once in a lifetime and the other jobs in the field will have you driving off a damn bridge they're so goddamn horrible.
micaiah67micaiah67 on May 15th, 2010 01:12 am (UTC)
Rob, I will buy anything you write! We have a book club in the office I work in and each month it's a different person's turn to pick a book. I have to suffer through months of sappy books to get my turn but when my turn finally comes around I make them read a good book. Last time it was my turn they read Nightlife. :)

I hope everyone gets out there and supports you!
Legolas McGeeseveredscythe on May 15th, 2010 01:18 am (UTC)
Jesus fuck that's seriously one of my favourite books. If I go out and buy fifteen now, will that help? I'll send them to everyone I know.
robgoodfellarobgoodfella on May 15th, 2010 01:09 pm (UTC)
Anything you do helps, of course, but Chimera is the one who has the far better chance of being helped now. From the u in your favorite, know any Americans who can buy them for you, so the sales count from June 1st- June 7th?

I've been planning to purchase Chimera as soon as it comes out - now I'll be doubly sure to buy it during the "key" timeframe!

robgoodfellarobgoodfella on May 15th, 2010 01:11 pm (UTC)
Thank you and your mightily scary icon. Yikes. Brings back childhood terrors. And the people who liked TOTL LOVED TOTL, but for some reason not as many bought it.

Ok, this post kinda freaked me out. Is Trixa and Cal not doing good or something?
robgoodfellarobgoodfella on May 15th, 2010 01:13 pm (UTC)
Trixa did not sell well. I can't survive on not selling well. Publishers can't survive on not selling well. People loved Trixa, but not enough people bought Trixa. Trixa 2 will still be out...it's already finished, has a cover and is a done deal...but you can't sell what people won't buy.

Do ebook copies count? I'm a little confused by how they sort that.

I'm banned from buying hard copy of anything until the too-many-people-too-little-room issue resolves itself. :(
robgoodfellarobgoodfella on May 15th, 2010 01:18 pm (UTC)
Amazon and Penguin are spatting, therefore Amazon will not be selling Kindles of any new Penguin books.

e-copies are available at:
B&N
Sony
Apple
Ebooks.com
Penguin.com
LSI (the wholesale that distributes to dozens of smaller retailers including fictionwise and dieselbooks)
Kobo (Canadian retailer)
But some of these agreements are new and Chimera may not yet be in e-book form there (and unfortunately NYT doesn't count Canadian sales. Sigh. Damn you, NYT.)

I am also curious about the eBooks. you said you had a list? do you still get the cred and royalties? I'd still buy one at B&N regardless, but I'm looking for more ways to support my favorite author.

for Road Kill, I had to pester an employee, then a manager, only to find out that "it wasn't convenient" to put it on the shelf for another week. so I pestered 'til one went in the back, opened a box to get Road Kill for me. (sometimes I really hate living in Alaska)
robgoodfellarobgoodfella on May 15th, 2010 01:21 pm (UTC)
They count, as my editor investigated and found out (so I don't feel as lost. She didn't know either.) But some of the agreements are new and CHIMERA may not be in e-form at these sites yet (as for cred, I get, royalties...I get something but I have no idea what.) B&N is good, e-book or hard copy, although I'm still a fan of hard copy. Love the smell of a new book. Can't smell pixels. Sigh. List below.

B&N
Sony
Apple
Ebooks.com
LSI (the wholesale that distributes to dozens of smaller retailers including fictionwise and dieselbooks)

Well that sucks. I really like Trixa and her boys. I haven't read thru all the comments so I don't know if this has been asked yet - since Robin made a very brief appearance, might we possibly see them returning the favor and making a special guest appearence with Cal & Nik? I can just imagine the special bonding Cal and Zeke would do...
robgoodfellarobgoodfella on May 15th, 2010 05:43 pm (UTC)
Ishiah makes a physical appearance in The Grimrose Path. But TOTL characters in NYC? Probably not. NYC monsters have gotten used to Cal, but to those who don't know him, tricksters like Leo and Trixa, he would be Auphe, an abomination (Robin hasn't been forthcoming to them about Cal at all--to protect Cal...and perhaps to protect them if they tried some Auphe-removal.) It might get ugly. And Griffin wouldn't let Zeke do any 'special bonding' with anyone but him. Damn, now I'm sad again.
