ROADKILLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL

As those who follow authors know, publicity is scarce (unless you're blowing someone really, really important. I spend more on publicity than I *make* from these books.) So although Deathwish made #26 NYT last year, there is no guarantee Roadkill will do as well (or better...and we really need better. Much, much better.) So as an incentive to those die-hard fans, you buy Roadkill between March 2nd (day of release) and March 6th (Saturday), I'll will send you the first chapter of Cal Book 6. I want a picture of the receipt sent to me with the date of that week and I'll have to figure out a way that you and only you get this. Because if you guys share and screw me out of my numbers/ranking/48 cents, it doesn't help my career in the slightest.

And let me tell you this...Roadkill is good fun...but the first chapter of Cal 6 will blow your fucking mind. I'm going all out on this one and...heh...no more hints, but it's goooooooooooooood.

Remember: Roadkill...March 2nd-March 6th. Email pic of receipt and you holding the book looking happy (maybe I'll make a collage.)  And, people, if Roadkill doesn't do as well as Deathwish, it will leave me in an awkward position (mentally and negotiation wise.) Don't let the boys down.  They've never let us down.

*****ADDENDUM: Books cannot be purchased online for this win of a peek of Cal Book 6 Chapter One (which kicks such ass that I even think it kicks ass and I typically want to burn my books for not being good enough when I'm done.) Why doesn't NYT count online sales, I don't know. Maybe because in the real bookstores in the real world you're only competing with other new releases. In online world you compete with every book ever written carried by the online store.

Has to be from a real store that exists outside the Matrix. One you can touch and where there are live people and you can buy ludicrously overpriced coffee. B&N, Borders, BAM, etc.

I applaud you. <3 I have a handful of friends who have either just recently finished book 1 or are partway through, and upon notification of your plight, they've all assured me they will be buying Roadkill as soon as is physically possible. Nightlife is pretty damn convincing.

Online doesn't count. It has to be a real bookstore with real people in it...not in the Matrix. NYT doesn't count online sales. Thanks for spreading the news w/Nightlife!

No, as I was robbed of my 48 cents. If you loved me, you'd go buy a real one. :(

Just one small question...

If I happen to go by my local Borders and they have it on the shelf a couple of days early, is that going to screw your numbers (and my chance at chapter #1 of book 6)? IE, do I *have* to make myself wait until the 2nd?

I will also be telling everyone I've already convinced to start reading Cal & Niko to pick up the book asap after 3/2.

P.S. - Is it March yet?

Re: Just one small question...

On 3/2 please. And for your friends 3/2 through 3/6 is the only time that truly helps me. Does have to be at a real bookstore. NYT doesn't count online sales. Thanks for spreading the love!

I was just about to say I AM SO ON THIS, I just need to beg for a ride that week. Then I realized that the Borders Express in my poor college town CLOSED. *cries* I'll have to see if I can bully my parents into purchasing it for me.

So we buy it from on any day from March 2 thru the 6th, and scan the receipt...then take a picture of spiffy selves with the book itself....got it. What if we order it online one of those days? Is that the same or not?

Would you like us to twitter, blog etc starting the 2nd too? Not for a contest, just to help.

Sorry, no. Onlines don't count. I don't know why they don't count, but you have to buy them from an actual store. Crazy shit and who makes up these rules, but I guess it might be because you're competing with new releases in the store, not every book ever made as in with online stores

Sounds like a deal to me! I planned on buying it March 2 anyway...assuming one of the B&N stores near my work in DC carries it. And they usually do keep your books in stock. I likey this!

I will definitely buy Roadkill on March 2nd and although I would LOVE an advanced copy of 'Cal 6,' I don't think I can send you a picture of my holding the book and receipt (I'm saving for an SLR digital model). I may be able to scan the receipt and email it off to you, though. Would that work?

[info]robgoodfella

February 13 2010, 01:15:43 UTC 2 years ago

scanning works, has to be a real bookstore, not online, and it's only a peek at chapter one of Cal 6. Not the whole book! I haven't even finished it yet. :)

I buy it on line for my eReader AND I buy the actual paper thingie *G* from B&N. March 2nd, I'm there. Sigh. No I'm not, march 2 is a Tuesday and B&N is 60 miles away. So-- March 6th on Saturday I'm there.

Do we get extra points for posing creatively with our receipt? Lol.

Actually if it is sufficiently creative and makes me laugh, yep, I'll throw in a signed something or another

I'm just hoping my Borders/B&N puts it out on time, but I'll be checking everyday until I get it. I'm sure somewhere in NYC they'll have it! I'm rereading Deathwish now in anticipation.

I heard an author mention once that it was better to buy the book from one store than another (think it was B&N v. Borders). Does it matter?

And if you order the book before 3/2 to make sure they have a copy for you, is it still OK as long as the actual purchase is on 3/2?

*wants to makes sure she gets it right* ^_^

I prefer B&N, simply because they tend to backstock the rest of my series a little better. But B&N or Borders are both good

You know I will be all over this one! Oh as a way to keep the first chapter from leaking out, perhaps you could put it in an Adobe Acrobat file? Many can be locked so they are read only and you are unable to copy and paste the text.

I am so there! My sister's getting surgery that week, so I need something to keep me occupied while I'm waiting around trying not to be nervous. Not many can accomplish that, but your books are up to the task!

o_O

Just a reader here, not a writer, so I'm pretty ignorant of the industry. But I'm really shocked to hear that online book sales don't count toward book ranking lists. I try to be conscientious about supporting authors, even buying some books I don't think I'll read right away just to support a favorite. And I do a lot of pre-orders. But I've been an Amazon junkie for a long time and feel bad knowing, now, that my purchases didn't count toward a listing. 48 cents a book is what an author makes? Wow, for the $7 I pay, you'd hope it would be more. Do you have any idea how authors fare with ebooks? I just got a Kindle last summer and have been really curious if ebooks were helping or hurting authors.

Re: o_O

Ah, Amazon and Kindle. I don't think there is an author out there right now that doesn't have very serious issues with Amazon after what they did. I personally will do my best to not buy from there again. I switched to B&N online over this issue. Pricy technology doesn't do much good when Amazon decides to negotiate by taking away your option to buy books from a big six publisher.

Re: Damn

As it's not supposed to be released until March 2nd, you probably have plenty of time to cancel the order and buy it in a bookstore. Seriously, people, Amazon is the *death* of new release rankings. It's where they go to be brutally butchered.

I love this idea, since I already had plans to go out with my niece and buy Roadkill day of release. (I just got her reading them, and she just bought her own copies of the first four because I demanded mine back. We've made a date to go into 'town' to get Roadkill. Lack of bookstores may be the worst part of rural life. :P)

So thanks for the books and the reason to go to the 'big' bookstore. ;)

Damn. Here's where my generosity fails. I sent my Cal collection to my husband in Iraq. Guess I can only read the Deathwish copy you sent me to refresh. Ah well. Certainly better than nothing.
I'm the only person in the world who doesn't like single chapter previews. But I'll buy the book anyway because I <3 you.

Opened my eyes...

Ok, so I saw tweets and random references to this "Amazon/Macmillan slapfight" but I didn't have a clue what it all meant. Thank you for the link to something that actually breaks it down. I'll definitely be there March 3rd to get Roadkill.
I'll also tweet/retweet, and blog about it too.
p.s. I haven't actually started this series yet b/c I accidently bought Deathwish & Madhouse first cause I thought they were book 1 and 2 since I somehow had my list inversed :"s
If I have enough book-money I'll get all 3 at once, if not know that I'll at least get Roadkill for sure at the actual Barnes & Noble store on March 3rd.
